Illuminated signs in the United States: exempt display or sign permit
That distinction decides what you have to do. A neon fitted indoors, not visible from the street, falls outside any procedure in most cities. As soon as it becomes a sign that can be read from outside, it comes under your local sign ordinance, and two routes open up: an exempt display that needs no paperwork, or a sign permit, to be applied for from your city planning or building department.
What the law requires of an illuminated sign
Let us start with what it does not require: no federal rule forces you to switch your sign off at night, anywhere in the country. Signage is written city by city, in the zoning code and the local sign ordinance, and those texts cover size, placement, brightness and animation rather than one national standard. Your city can set curfew hours or a brightness cap in the permit conditions, and an overly bright sign can still be challenged locally as a nuisance, so the rule that binds you is the one your own municipality has adopted.
The real question is the permit. An interior sign that cannot be read from the street is usually exempt, while a sign mounted on the storefront or visible from the public way is reviewed against every one of the criteria your city has written down: total sign area, most often tied to a ratio of storefront frontage, mounting height above the sidewalk, projection over the public way, whether the illumination is static or animated, and a brightness cap that many ordinances express in nits and lower after dark. Two situations call for a second review in any case: in a historic district and on a landmarked building, the local preservation commission approves the design, often through a certificate of appropriateness, before the building department will issue anything. Putting a sign up without that permit is a code violation, and it is the business the sign advertises that answers for it. Penalties are set municipality by municipality, so no national figure exists, but they usually combine a fine, a daily amount for as long as the sign stays up, and an order to remove it.
What we supply to keep it simple
Every neon ships with an infrared remote and a dimmer. One practical point to remember: most sign ordinances treat static illumination far more kindly than moving light. A flash mode or an animated sequence pushes you into a stricter category, and several districts ban it outright, whereas a fixed monochrome neon stays within the rules. So we deliver at fixed brightness by default, and the dimmer is there to set the intensity, not to animate the sign.
Tell us in the form whether the sign will be visible from the street, and whether your premises sit in a historic district or in a landmarked building: that is what decides the procedure, and therefore the lead time. The backing, the IP65 weatherproofing and the mounting are not the same for a storefront as for an interior, and neither is the pricing.
