The technology

What exactly is a flexible LED neon

A flexible LED neon is a soft tube sheathed in silicone or PVC, housing a high-density LED strip powered at low voltage. It recreates the look of traditional glass neon, without noble gas, without a high-voltage transformer, and without the fragility.

In practical terms, you get a continuous line of light, hand-bendable down to a 5 cm radius, that can be cut to length and mounted straight onto a clear acrylic backing. Power draw falls to between 6 and 8 watts per metre, around ten times less than glass neon, and it runs from a simple 12 or 24 volt driver. This shift in approach has moved flexible LED neon from the industrial market into premium interior décor and high-end commercial signage.

Not all flexible LED neons are equal. The difference comes down to three measurable criteria: the sheath material (silicone vs PVC), the tube diameter (4, 6, 8, 10 mm) and the quality of the internal LED strip. That is precisely where the Helioneon signature is built.

The 6 mm silicone monoline technology

At Helioneon, we manufacture exclusively in 6 mm monoline silicone tube. That diameter is no accident: it is the perfect balance between line fineness, light intensity and mechanical strength. The silicone itself delivers a perfectly smooth surface, with no visible joins, and even beam diffusion. You will never see a single pinpoint LED. Just a continuous line of light, as if drawn with a brush.

Signature diameter

Calibrated silicone tube, identical along the full length of the neon, with no extra bulk at the curves.

100%
Continuous glow

High LED density (120 LEDs/m) paired with silicone diffusion that erases every visible LED.

12-24V
Low voltage

No high-voltage transformer, no electrical risk on contact, plugs into a standard socket.

Flush backing

Laser-cut clear acrylic backing set flush with the tube, never any visible overhang.

The real reasons

Why choose flexible LED neon over glass neon

Glass neon still holds historic charm, but in 2026 the rational choice consistently favours flexible LED. Here are six concrete reasons.

A lifespan multiplied by ten

100,000 hours on Helioneon silicone versus 8,000 to 15,000 hours for glass neon. Over ten years of daily use, you replace a glass neon, never a flexible LED. More details on the 100,000-hour lifespan.

An electricity bill cut by ten

6 watts per metre versus 60 to 100 watts. A 5-metre sign lit 12 hours a day drops from 1,800 kWh a year to 130 kWh, saving more than 250 euros every year.

No electrical risk on contact

Glass runs at 5,000-15,000 volts, which requires a dangerous high-voltage transformer. Flexible LED stays at 12-24V, with no risk at all, approved for installation in a child's bedroom or bathroom.

Truly free design

Glass is hand-blown, which drastically limits possible shapes and sends the price soaring on complex pieces. Flexible LED bends by hand, allowing cursive lettering, illustrations and detailed logos.

Safe transport

Glass breaks, that is its nature. Silicone is unbreakable, so you receive your neon safely with no worries, and you can move it without any special procedure.

Genuine customisation made accessible

On a custom neon in flexible LED, the cost of an extra letter stays linear. With glass, every complex curve adds hours of blowing and sends the quote soaring exponentially.

Flexible LED neon FAQ

Silicone offers more even light diffusion, better resistance to UV and yellowing, and a premium matt finish. PVC, which is cheaper to produce, hardens over time, yellows under UV and often shows the LEDs through the sheath. For use beyond three years, silicone remains far more cost-effective and keeps its original look.
Yes, provided you choose our waterproof IP65 version, the Helioneon standard certified for all outdoor use (façade, terrace, garden, outdoor events). IP65 withstands water jets, driving rain, frost, UV and coastal weather. The driver comes in a waterproof housing, compliant with electrical standards for safe outdoor installation.
Each tube has cut marks every 5 or 10 cm depending on the model. You cut with a craft knife or shears at the mark, then seal the end with the silicone cap provided. For specific lengths, it is better to order the exact length directly on the product page, which guarantees a clean, waterproof finish at the ends.
Allow around 7 watts per metre on average, multiplied by the total length, plus a 20 per cent safety margin. A 5-metre neon therefore needs a driver of at least 42 watts, so a standard 60W model. All our neons come with their calibrated, CE-certified power supply, so you do not need to do any calculations yourself.
Very little. LED technology gives off less than 5 per cent of the heat of traditional glass neon. A silicone tube stays warm to the touch, never hot, making it completely safe for children's bedrooms, ventilated bathrooms and near textiles or wood. No fire risk, validated by CE standards.
The price depends on the total developed length of the tube, the complexity of the shape and the mount. For a standard first name 50 cm high, expect between 110 and 180 euros. For a professional sign 1.5 metres with a custom mount, the price rises to between 350 and 600 euros. Variants based on the LED technology remain far more affordable than blown glass.
